The Chief Lobbyist of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Jeremiah Quayson, has called on all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to take immediate and decisive action to improve pedestrian safety, especially on highways and high-traffic roads.
The call comes amid persistent cases of avoidable pedestrian fatalities, many linked to the non-use of designated footbridges. Mr Quayson said stricter enforcement at the local level would significantly reduce these needless deaths.
He urged MMDCEs to immediately task their local security task forces to enforce the mandatory use of pedestrian footbridges, stressing that the safety of citizens must remain a top priority. According to him, enforcement, rather than repeated public appeals, is critical to changing behaviour and saving lives.
Mr Quayson further called on all Assemblies to deepen collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority to adopt and implement best practices in road safety management, public education, signage and enforcement.
He noted that a coordinated approach involving local authorities, security agencies and road safety regulators would improve compliance and deliver better public safety outcomes.
Mr Quayson stressed that the time has come for Assemblies to move from awareness to enforcement, insisting that protecting lives is not optional but a collective responsibility.
