The Agogo Traditional Council and Etia Aduana Royal family have announced the passing of Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, Omanhene of the Agogo, Asante Akyem, in the Ashanti Region.
The Queen Mother of Agogo, Nana Serwaa Afrakoma Kusi Oboadum, together with the Agogo Traditional Council have formally informed the Asantehene, Otumfou Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace last Sunday in accordance with Asante tradition and custom.
These was contained in a statement signed by the Krontihene of Agogo Traditional Area, Nana Kwame Nti and copied The Ghanaian Times in Accra on Friday.
“The revered chief, occupant of the Ofori Krobon Stool, served the people of Asante Agogo for 51 years.
“His stewardship strengthened the traditional identity and values of Agogoman, and embraced modernisation for growth,” it said.
The statement further added that Nana Akuoko Sarpong also enhanced the development of Asante’s customs and his reign marked an unwavering dedication, wisdom, dignity and stood as a symbol of unity.
It noted that the late Omanhene was an embodiment of the highest ideals of leadership, integrity, and patriotism.
Nana Akuoko Sarpong according to the statement, throughout his life as a politician served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem North with the Popular Front Party from 1979 to 1981 and became a member of the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) governments.
Nana Akuoko Sarpong served in several capacities in the NDC government including Minister of Health, Minister of Interior, Presidential Staffer for Chieftaincy Affairs, Chairman for the Commission on Culture, and Counsel of State Member.
He also champion national unity, democratic development, and economic reforms for his community and his passion was a monumental loss to the country.
Nana Akuoko Sarpong was a respected legal practitioner and a firm advocate for education.
He left behind his 65 year old wife and 15 children.
The traditional one week observation rites would be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Agogo Asante Akyem, the statement concluded.
