The Nima Market, one of Ghana’s busiest commercial centres, is set for a major transformation with plans to construct a modern 24-hour trading facility equipped with an underground parking system, improved security features and essential social amenities.
The redevelopment is expected to create a safer, more organised and efficient commercial hub while improving trading conditions for thousands of traders and customers who rely on the market for their livelihoods.
Details of the project were disclosed at the Ayawaso East Stakeholder Engagement on the proposed 24-hour Economy Market held in Accra yesterday.
The engagement brought together residents, traders and other stakeholders to discuss plans for the redevelopment.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, Mr Baba Jamal, said the inclusion of an underground parking facility would make the Nima Market project one of the best models of its kind in the country.
He explained that the decision was informed by the severe congestion challenges at Nima, particularly on busy market days when heavy vehicular traffic affects movement around the area.
According to him, the underground parking facility would accommodate between 100 and 200 vehicles, creating more space around the market and improving accessibility for traders, customers and visitors.
“Looking at the situation at Nima, we cannot allow an open parking space. We need an underground parking facility to ensure that the market remains accessible in the future,” he stated.
The Ayawaso East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, said the redevelopment had become necessary due to the historical and economic importance of the Nima Market.
He said the market had over the years served not only residents of the area but also traders and customers from across Ghana and the wider Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region.
Mr Ibrahim said the project would preserve the market’s economic significance while introducing modern infrastructure to support thousands of traders who depend on it.
The consultant for the project, Ms Abena Nuako Otchere, indicated that the new market was designed to operate as a self-sufficient commercial centre where traders and customers could access essential services without having to leave the facility.
