The Central Region Boxing Federation (CRBF) chairman, Mr Twintoh Walker, is promising excitement and fireworks at this year’s Fetu Afahye boxing extravagansa.
Dubbed ‘Oguaa Fetu Afahye@60 regional boxing championship,’ will bring four regions including the host, Greater Accra, Volta and Western regions to entertain the boxing fans who have been starved of boxing thrills.
The energetic and hardworking C/R boxing federation boss said this when he called on the newly appointed Central Regional Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Madam Vivian M. Dougbo at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and presented a federation branded Lacoste to her.
Officially, the visit was also to welcome her to the regional sports space and invite her to the championship scheduled for Friday, September 6 at London Bridge on the Commercial Street, Cape Coast.
According to Mr Walker, the sport had taken a downward spiral due to the lack of corporate sector support, a situation he believes was making life tough for the teeming youth on the streets.
“Boxing helped in taking the youth off the streets and from the negative vices, but a few years of inactivity has affected those little gains. We’re hoping that the success of this year’s edition will help us identify talented boxers and groom them to become world champions.”
According to him, the tournament will also have female and juvenile boxers between the ages of four to eight years.
He said the regional boxing federation has embarked on a fundraising drive, aiming to court support from companies and individuals in order to take care of feeding, transportation, accommodation of boxers and officials, and other logistics needed for the festival.
He therefore, appealed to companies in and outside the region to come on board to ensure a unique championship.
Responding, Madam Doubgor, commended Mr Twintoh Walker for his commitment to boxing in the region.
She expressed excitement about the return of the Oguaa Fetu Afahye
Regional Boxing Championship which she believes would bring the people together.
She advised the boxers to train hard to make the region proud against some of the finest regions as far as boxing at that level was concerned.
