The Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana (CITG), has reiterated that it remains the only statutory body mandated to regulate the practice of taxation in the country under the Chartered Institute of Taxation Act, 2016 (Act 916).

The Institute explained that, in accordance with the law, no individual is permitted to practise as a chartered tax practitioner or tax practitioner unless duly registered as a member of the Institute and has satisfied all prescribed requirements.

It emphasised that it is the only legally recognised body authorised to conduct professional examinations in taxation leading to certification as a Chartered Tax Practitioner in Ghana.

Consequently, the CITG has cautioned individuals, institutions and other bodies currently conducting taxation examinations or certifying persons to practise as tax professionals to desist from such activities, describing them as unlawful.

The Institute also called on individuals offering tax services or advice to regularise their status by registering with the CITG and fulfilling the necessary requirements under Act 916.

In an interview with The Ghanaian Times in Accra, the Vice-President of CITG, Mr Fred Awuttey, advised the public, particularly employers, to exercise caution and conduct due diligence before engaging tax practitioners or advisors.

He urged organisations to verify the legal status and certification of individuals to ensure they were properly licensed to practise.

Mr Awuttey said the Institute remained committed to upholding professionalism, integrity and high standards in tax practice in Ghana.

He stated that the CITG would take all lawful measures under Act 916 and other applicable laws to prevent and address unauthorised tax practice in the country.

The Institute further urged all stakeholders, including students and individuals seeking to practise taxation, to comply with the legal requirements by contacting the CITG to complete the necessary registration and certification processes.

It stressed that adherence to the law was essential to ensuring credibility and professionalism within the taxation sector.
