The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has disclosed that an internet café operator and an applicant in Kumasi were arrested for document forgery during the ongoing military recruitment exercise. The suspects have been handed over to the Suhum Police for prosecution.
Lieutenant General Agyapong made this revelation during a visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior to the El-Wak Sports Stadium and Burma Camp—two of the centres for the GAF recruitment exercise, which resumed recently.
The CDS explained that some internet café operators were altering the disqualified summary sheets of potential recruits to reflect them as qualified. However, thanks to the GAF’s scanning process, these falsifications were detected.
“We have discovered that some internet café operators have duped many young applicants by altering their disqualified summary sheets to indicate qualification. In Kumasi, we traced one café and have handed the applicants and the operator to the Suhum Police for prosecution,” Lieutenant General Agyapong stated.
He added that the recruitment exercise in Greater Accra has been running smoothly following the implementation of new safety protocols. These measures include the provision of chairs along screening lanes, allowing applicants to sit while waiting, a key recommendation after the El-Wak stampede that tragically claimed the lives of six female potential recruits.
The Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee, Mr James Agalga, expressed satisfaction with the recruitment process in Greater Accra.
“The GAF has set up multiple centres and teams to simultaneously assess the eligibility of applicants. Doctors and documentation teams are fully operational, ensuring a streamlined process,” he said.
Mr Agalga indicated that the committee would meet with the CDS and his team to review and formalize the protocols observed during the exercise to guide future operations. He further noted that conducting screening exercises concurrently for the security services will require close collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Interior.
During the visit, the committee toured centres responsible for screening, physical measurements, and eligibility checks, observing first-hand the efficiency and safety measures now in place.
