The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested 258 suspects in connection with the violent disturbances that rocked Nsawam Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region on July 7.

The suspects are assisting police investigations into a series of criminal acts, including alleged looting, arson, vandalism and robbery, which caused fear and panic among residents of the community.

A statement signed by the Eastern South Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) David Fianko Okyere, said the arrests were made during a joint intelligence led operation conducted by the Eastern South Regional Police Command and a team from the National Operations Directorate.

According to the statement, preliminary investigations indicated that some youth allegedly looted shops, set fire to an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer, vandalised the Oko Anadwo Palace and an astro turf facility, and robbed mobile money vendors during the disturbances.

It said the operation also led to the retrieval of two locally manufactured firearms, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, suspected tramadol and Viagra tablets, as well as several mobile phones.

The statement said all 258 suspects were currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

It assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to safeguard lives and property while investigations continued.

The command appealed to members of the public to volunteer credible information that could assist ongoing investigations by reporting to the nearest police station.

It further cautioned residents, particularly the youth, to remain law abiding and refrain from acts capable of undermining public peace and security.
