The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged murder of a couple who went missing in April 2026 and has also identified the alleged mastermind behind the Buipe Cattle Market robbery and murder, who died during a Police operation.
The developments form part of seven major operational breakthroughs announced by the Police, involving murder, armed robbery, bank attacks and illegal firearms across several regions.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, disclosed the cases at a press briefing at the National Police Headquarters in Accra yesterday, where he outlined the outcome of weeks of coordinated intelligence-led operations.
The suspect arrested in connection with the murder of Dr Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Amuah Esi, is Abraham Awundok, 32, who worked as an errand boy for the couple.
Mr Yohuno said investigations had established that the couple had been murdered after searches were conducted at their residence, other locations they were believed to have visited and with information obtained from family members.
Their mortal remains were subsequently recovered and conveyed to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The suspect allegedly took the couple’s mobile phones, money and private vehicle before fleeing Ghana for the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to the IGP, he was declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice and was deported from Dubai to Ghana on August 30 by investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.
He said Awundok admitted to the murder during interrogation and remains in Police custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the alleged mastermind behind the Buipe Cattle Market robbery and murder, Alhaji Imoro Beliko, alias Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, 60, died after allegedly attempting to escape during a Police operation.
Mr Yohuno said Beliko, a trader at the market, allegedly contracted robbers and supplied them with weapons to attack persons carrying large sums of money.
On June 29, two mobile money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market were attacked and GH₵430,000 was reportedly stolen.
Initial investigations led to the arrest of Yacouba Oumar, 28, and the recovery of a pump-action gun, five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun.
The IGP said intelligence received on September 5 led Police to Beliko’s whereabouts. He was placed under surveillance but allegedly attempted to escape when officers moved in and was shot.
He later died from his injuries.
The Police have since intensified intelligence operations in the area to protect traders and other community members.
