The family of a food vendor in Kumasi has expressed relief and joy following the successful rescue of her five-month-old son, Akwasi Banahene, who was allegedly abducted at the Asafo Market on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
The infant was rescued yesterday by officers from the Ejisu Police Division, acting on intelligence and in coordination with the Asokwa Police Command.
A woman, believed to be between 37 and 40 years old, was arrested at Ejisu while allegedly attempting to flee with the child.
The incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. at the Cape Coast Bus Terminal section of the Asafo Market, where the mother, Freda, had placed her sleeping son on a seat in front of her stall.
According to an uncle, Mr Osei Kuffour, the suspect disappeared with the baby shortly afterwards.
Police subsequently issued a region-wide alert, leading to the suspect’s interception at Ejisu. The baby was examined and found to be in good health before being reunited with his family. The suspect remains in custody assisting investigations
