The Upper East (UE) Regional Police Command have retrieved a cache of weapons and motorbikes following a follow up operation to dismantle a notorious robbery gang linked to a series of attacks on motorbike riders and mobile money vendors across the region.
Three suspects, identified as Amadu Apiiga, 33, Philip Vokbilla and Bilal Adabode alias Sulley, who led the Police to a location where the gang had allegedly concealed its weapons, were shot during the operation and later pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
According to the police, the incident occurred at the Tilly Forest when a Police team accompanied the suspects to the location where they had indicated that the gang’s rifles were hidden. The team subsequently came under gunfire, resulting in injuries to the three suspects and two Police officers.
The injured officers were receiving medical attention, while other persons believed to have sustained gunshot wounds fled the scene.
Items retrieved during the operation included two locally manufactured single barrel guns, two pistols, including a BRUNI 92 pistol with 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and 18 live BB cartridges.
The Police also recovered three sharp cutlasses, four unregistered Yamaha Aerox scooters, a pair of black boots, a motorbike number plate and two mobile phones.
The gang had allegedly been involved in robbery attacks on motorbike riders and mobile money vendors in Benaba, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, Zebilla and surrounding communities.
The suspects were also linked to the murder of a Police officer during a robbery incident at Zebilla on February 8, 2026.
The Police said six other members of the gang who had earlier been arrested were in custody assisting with investigations, while efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest the remaining members and trace the source of the weapons.
The Command urged members of the public to report any person found with suspected gunshot wounds to the nearest Police station to assist with investigations.
