Power theft and illegal connections are fuelling persistent power outages in the Upper East Region, with 20 transformers destroyed between January and August this year, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has disclosed.
The Commission said illegal connections, meter bypassing and tampering were placing excessive and unplanned demand on the electricity network, causing transformers to overheat and fail.
