President John Dramani Mahama is expected to open the two-day National Conference on Housing Finance on October 7, 2026, in Accra, with stakeholders set to deliberate on innovative financing mechanisms to expand access to adequate and affordable housing in Ghana.
The conference is to be organised by the National Homeownership Fund (NHF) under the theme: ‘Adequate Housing for All: Innovative Financing for Ghana’s Housing Future.’
President Mahama, who will be the Guest of Honour, is expected to deliver the keynote address at the opening session, which will bring together representatives from government, financial institutions, the private sector, development institutions, civil society, academia and local government.
The conference comes amid persistent challenges in Ghana’s housing sector, including rising construction costs, limited availability of long-term financing, high mortgage rates and affordability constraints, which continue to affect access to adequate housing for many households.
A statement issued by the NHF said the two-day event would focus on how Ghana could mobilise and deploy capital more effectively to expand housing opportunities, particularly for low- and middle-income households.
It said the conference would also examine the current state of the country’s housing finance ecosystem and explore innovative approaches capable of increasing access to sustainable and affordable housing finance.
The event is being organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Bank of Ghana and Shelter Afrique Development Bank.
Financial institutions, labour unions and private sector stakeholders are also expected to participate in the discussions.
The statement said the conference would provide a platform for stakeholders to move beyond discussions and identify “actionable financing solutions, institutional reforms and partnerships” to shape the country’s housing future.
It is expected to culminate in a policy outcomes communiqué containing practical recommendations to guide policy development, implementation and resource mobilisation for the housing sector.
The conference forms part of activities marking World Habitat Day 2026, which draws attention to the state of human settlements and the importance of adequate housing to inclusive and sustainable development.
The NHF said the event reflected Ghana’s commitment to strengthening the systems, institutions and financing mechanisms required to make adequate and affordable housing more accessible.
The Fund, a government-backed housing finance institution, was established to support increased access to affordable homeownership and contribute to the development of Ghana’s housing finance ecosystem.
Through partnerships with government institutions, financial institutions, housing developers and other stakeholders, the NHF seeks to develop sustainable financing solutions to make homeownership more accessible to Ghanaians.
