The Private Newspapers and Online Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has commended the government’s proposal to establish the National Media Fund (NFM), an initiative aimed at tackling the operational costs, dwindling advertising revenue, limited access to training opportunities, and growing challenges in the media landscape.
The Association said that the challenges in the media industry undermines media independence, vibrancy, and the long-term viability of the media, indicating the essence of the establishment of the fund.
In a statement signed by the President of PRINPAG, David Tamakloe, acknowledged the President’s thoughtfulness and his deep commitment towards the development of the media.
“We recall that he first introduced the concept of a national media support mechanism during his first term in office, although its objectives could not be fully realised before the conclusion of that administration in 2016,” the statement read.
PRINPAG said the president’s demonstrated leadership and dedication to national progress provided the assurance that the media advancement he championed in his first term would be realised.
The Association urged the government to expedite the process towards the establishment of the fund to provide assistance to journalists and media institutions across the country.
It proposed that the media fund should be anchored on the back of strong governance structures to ensure transparency, independence, and an effective administration.
It outlined the office of a dedicated secretariat, a fund administrator, and an independent board of competent and experienced individuals to ensure proper management of the fund.
The Association is also calling on media stakeholders and development partners to support the initiative in order to strengthen Ghana’s media ecosystem.
