An adjunct professor of nutrition at the University of Ghana, Professor Anna Lartey, has called for the imposition of restrictive taxes on unhealthy foods as part of efforts to create a healthier food environment in the country.
Furthermore, she said there was the need to restrict the advertisement of unhealthy products such as fast foods, junk foods, sugar and unnatural soft drinks as a means of tackling poor nutrition among all brackets of the population.
“We are telling people to change their diet, but yet we put them in an environment where it is so difficult for them to make the right food choices. It is not fair,” she said.
Prof. Lartey, who delivered the keynote address at the 60th anniversary of the Nestlé Foundation at the University of Ghana, Legon, last Saturday, on the topic: “Nutrition at the frontiers of the changing environment; Global nutrition situation, policy action”, said governments must introduce policies that would support consumers to make healthier choices.
She said some countries had already introduced such measures, demonstrating that governments could use policy and regulation to influence the food environment and promote healthier diets. Read More
