Emma Raducanu retired ill from her first-round match of the WTA 1,000-level Wuhan Open on Tuesday.
The British No. 1 and former U.S. Open champion had her blood pressure checked and temperature taken during her match against American Ann Li.
Li was leading 6-1, 4-1 when Raducanu retired and will now face No. 9 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round.
Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka came from behind to defeat Leylah Fernandez 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the second round.
It was Osaka’s first appearance in the central Chinese city since 2017, and she faced Fernandez, the player who stunned her at the 2021 U.S. Open.
Fernandez, who was beaten by Raducanu in the U.S. Open final four years ago, converted one of her two first-set breakpoint opportunities and served consistently throughout.
However, Osaka increased the pressure on her opponent’s serve in the second set, which featured five service breaks, and ultimately overpowered the 2021 U.S. Open finalist.
In other early matches, Sofia Kenin edged Anastasia Zakharova 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to set up a second-round clash against No. 16 seed Liudmila Samsonova, who defeated Emiliana Arango 6-1, 7-5.
