A renovated health centre, estimated at GH¢121,150, has been inaugurated at Galo-Sota in the Anloga District of the Volta Region to enhance quality healthcare delivery in the area.
The renovation works included the reconstruction of cracked and collapsed walls, replacement of windows and nets, installation of new ceilings and doors, reroofing of the facility, and painting of various departments such as the Outpatient Department (OPD), consulting room and detention room, among others.
The project was undertaken by the Member of Parliament for Anlo, Mr Richard Kwame Sepe, who restored the health centre to enable residents to continue accessing healthcare services without difficulty.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr Sepe explained that when the health centre deteriorated and became unfit for use, an illustrious son of Galo-Sota, Professor Lade Wosornu, offered his private residence to the Anloga District Health Directorate to serve as a temporary facility.
The MP disclosed that the renovation was funded through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) component of the MP’s Common Fund. He further assured residents that steps would be taken to address accommodation and water challenges facing staff of the health centre to ensure a conducive working environment.
Mr Sepe also announced plans to provide a laboratory facility at the health centre to offer basic laboratory services, thereby reducing referrals to Sogakope and the Anloga Polyclinic.
Additionally, the MP expressed concern about the increasing involvement of the youth in drug and substance abuse, which he said was contributing to mental health problems, and urged parents and community stakeholders to intensify education on its dangers.
The Acting Anloga District Director of Health Services (DDHS), Mr Eyram Dogah, commended Professor Wosornu for his continuous contribution to the promotion of quality healthcare delivery at Galo-Sota and called on other stakeholders to emulate his example.
Mr Dogah also praised Mr Sepe for his commitment to improving healthcare in the district, which culminated in the successful renovation of the Galo-Sota Health Centre, and assured that the facility would be put to good use.
The Anloga District Public Health Nurse and District Network Practice Coordinator, Ms Gloria Agbafa, appealed to the government to provide the health centre with an ambulance to transport critically ill patients to health facilities in Sogakope and Anloga, citing the isolated nature of the community.
The Officer-in-Charge of the Galo-Sota Health Centre, Ms Delali Domeh, also appealed for additional staff, explaining that the facility currently has only three personnel—a midwife, a general registered nurse, and a public health nurse—which she said was inadequate to meet the healthcare needs of the community.
She revealed that the health centre attends to between 150 and 200 patients monthly and stressed the urgent need for a physician assistant to be posted to the facility to improve service delivery.
