The Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu, has appealed to traditional councils and chiefs to resolve chieftaincy and land disputes in the region to promote growth and attract investment.

He noted that the region had recorded 69 chieftaincy disputes, out of which only three had been resolved amicably, and urged stakeholders to work towards settling the remaining 66 cases.

Mr Gunu made the appeal when a delegation from the Mepe Traditional Council and the executives of the Mepe Development Association (MDA) paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Ho yesterday.

He stressed that addressing chieftaincy and land disputes was critical to attracting investors to explore opportunities in the region, adding that chiefs must play a leading role in promoting peace in their respective communities.

The Regional Minister commended the Mepe Traditional Council for using the Afenorto Festival over the years to promote peace and development in the area.

He emphasised that peace was a prerequisite for development and urged other traditional areas to emulate the Mepe Development Association’s commitment to community progress.

The Manklalo of Mepe, Togbe Nego, who led the delegation, stated that the visit was to congratulate the Regional Minister on his hard work and commitment to the development of the region.

He said the chiefs and people of the Mepe Traditional Area were satisfied with the efforts of Mr Gunu and the President John Dramani Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in bringing development to the people.

Togbe Nego noted that previous appeals to reconstruct the Sege–Battor–Mepe–Dove Junction road had gone unheeded, but expressed appreciation that the current government had begun work on the project, which he said would boost economic activities in the area.

He also appealed to the Regional Minister to facilitate the construction of roads within Mepe, explaining that many of the town’s roads were destroyed following floods from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

According to him, rehabilitating the roads would improve the appearance of the town and enhance mobility.

Togbe Nego used the occasion to invite President John Dramani Mahama, through the Regional Minister, to the 70th Afenorto Festival.

A senior divisional chief of the Mepe Traditional Area, Togbe Kodzo Azagba, encouraged Mr Gunu to ensure that ongoing development projects were completed so that his contributions would be remembered in the history of the region.
