The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, last Sunday visited the Ghana Women’s National Rugby League team, the Leopardess, as they wrapped up preparation at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium ahead of their trip to Nigeria.

The Leopardess will be in Lagos for the three-game Senior International Match series against the Green Falcons of Nigeria, scheduled on October 4-11.

Nigeria will use the series to test the readiness for the Women’s Rugby League World Series, where they will compete against top nations such as Fiji, Canada, and Ireland while the Ghanaian side look to challenge themselves against an elite opposition ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifiers for the 2028 Rugby League World Cup.

The Director General urged them to remain focused, disciplined, and united as they prepare to represent Ghana on foreign soil.

“I believe in your talent and determination. I can see this is a very young team, and that really reflects the future plans of the federation. Representing the country at this stage is a big responsibility, but it is also a step towards growth. Go out there, play with pride, and make Ghana proud,” he moltivated them.

Mr Ampofo Ankrah also reaffirmed the NSA’s commitment to backing the growth of women’s sports in Ghana and emphasised the Leopardess’ role as pioneers in flying the country’s flag on the international rugby league stage.

Captain of the team, Elizabeth Adongo, thanked Mr Ampofo Ankrah for his visit which she said had provided an extra boost of motivation for the players and technical staff ahead of the trip.

Currently ranked 24th in the world, the Leopardess will be represented by skipper Adongo, Hilaria Wuaku, Millicent Njomaba, Jacqueline Ansah, Princess Avorkah, Gracelove Hammond, Fati Bhom, Ivy Benyah, Gifty Sowah and Eunice Lawoe, Celestine Kumah, Mariama Musah, Minawara Alhassan and Henrietta Arhin.

The rest are Grace Nketiah, Maria Tii Pegyine, Mary Kesse and Christiana Ndewine.

The team will be coached by Riddick Alibah and Julius Fiakpornu.
