Sterling Feyenoord debut delayed

Robin Van Persie has set up a special training camp for new signing Raheem Sterling in Belgium.

Feyenoord manager Van Persie snapped up the free agent, 31, after his Chelsea contract was ripped up last month.

Sterling is not yet able to play in the Netherlands or even train with his new team-mates because his work permit has not been sorted.

So former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Van Persie is moving his squad across the border to Belgium instead.

He said: “That’s allowed abroad.

“We’re doing it for him but I also want to work on our team development.

“We can have some good conversations and do something fun together.”

Sterling hasn’t kicked a ball all season after Chelsea put him in their ‘bomb squad’ of unwanted players in August.

His last match was in May at the end of a disappointing loan spell at Arsenal last season.

Van Persie added: “We’ll see each week when he’s fit for a match.

“That will take some time, but that seems logical to me, since he hasn’t played for six months.”

Sterling joined Feyenoord last week after holding talks with the head coach.

He was promised regular game time by Van Persie, who also highlighted exactly where the winger fits in his plans.-The Sun
