THE Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ali Adolf John Mburidiba, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Northern Region to demonstrate renewed commitment to accountability and collaborate effectively to improve service delivery in their respective districts.
He stated that strong collaboration and commitment among the assemblies would lead to improved performance and enhanced income across the board.
Mr Mburidiba made the remarks in Tamale on Friday during the signing of the 2026 Performance Contracts by MMDCEs.
He stated that, over the past years, assessments of MMDAs’ performance outcomes had been poorly recorded in the districts.
The signing ceremony brought together MMDAs, stakeholders, government agencies, and individuals to witness the event.
The minister said the exercise marked an important step toward strengthening performance management and accountability within the decentralised governance system.
Mr Mburidiba expressed concern over the findings of the 2023 Performance Evaluation Exercise, describing the results as troubling and a wake-up call for the assemblies.
According to the assessment, none of the districts in the region attained an excellent rating; only one district achieved a good rating, six assemblies were rated satisfactory, while nine were rated unsatisfactory.
The Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) also recorded poor performance, which, he said, cast a shadow over the region’s overall performance and raised serious questions about its ability to meet the development expectations of the people across the region.
“The signing of the 2026 Performance Contracts should not be viewed as a routine administrative exercise but as a binding commitment to measurable improvement and tangible development outcomes,” Mr Mburidiba said.
He urged the MMDCEs and Coordinating Directors to set clear targets, strengthen teamwork within the assemblies, and implement effective strategies to promote efficiency, accountability, and results-driven service delivery.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Yendi, Mr Muniru Sugri, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, expressed appreciation to the Minister and the Regional Coordinating Council for their leadership and guidance.
He reaffirmed the collective commitment of all MMDCEs and their respective assemblies to work diligently toward achieving the targets outlined in the 2026 Performance Contracts.
Mr Sugri assured stakeholders and residents that the MMDAs would intensify efforts to improve service delivery and achieve measurable development outcomes in line with government and citizen expectations.
He added that the assemblies would align their operations with the key performance indicators outlined in the contracts to ensure the successful attainment of the goals set for the 2026 administrative year.
