STU Vice- Chancellor, Bono Regional Minister rally support for GHATUSA 2027

THE Vice-Chancellor of Sunyani Technical University (STU), Ing. Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, has called for urgent investment in sporting facilities as the University prepares to host the 2027 Ghana Technical Universities Sports Association (GHATUSA) Games.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) last Friday, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the inadequacies of sports infrastructure in the Bono Region but said he was optimistic that with broad stakeholder support, STU could transform these challenges into a lasting legacy.

Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah said the 2027 Games would position STU and Sunyani as a centre for national sporting excellence, assuring that with collective effort, the University would deliver a Games of distinction and long-term impact.

“We are calling on government, corporate institutions, alumni, and benevolent individuals to support the University to complete the AstroTurf pitch, construct standard athletics tracks, and provide volleyball and handball courts. These facilities will enable us to host the 2027 Games successfully and also serve as a legacy for community and national sports development,” he appealed.

Mrs Evelyn Nsiah Asare, Sports Manager of STU and Vice-Chairperson of the LOC, revealed that several students who are awarded sports scholarships at STU often decline the opportunity because the institution lacks the requisite facilities to nurture them into career athletes.

She explained that without investment in training infrastructure, the University risks losing talented sportsmen and women to other institutions or forcing them to abandon their ambitions altogether.

The Guest of Honour, Mr Joseph Addae Akwaboah Esq., Bono Regional Minister, pledged the support of the Regional Coordinating Council.

He said the Games would extend beyond the University to benefit the entire region.

“The 2027 GHATUSA Games must not only be a celebration of talent and sportsmanship but also an avenue to boost the socio-economic life of Sunyani and the Bono Region. This is not just a university programme; it is a regional and national project, and the people of Bono will rally behind STU,” he assured.

A message delivered on behalf of Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, Chair of the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G), reinforced the call for sponsorship, partnership and excellence.

The Executive Secretary, Mr Joseph Mensah Oti-Asirifi, commended STU’s preparations and urged the LOC to set a new benchmark in the Games’ history, assuring them of continued institutional support.

The 11-member Local Organising Committee is chaired by Professor Kwadwo Boateng Prempeh, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Business, with Mr Felix Kwabena Danso, Chairman of the STU Sports Committee, as a key member. Other members include Ms Evelyn Nsiah Asare, STU Sports Manager and Vice-Chairperson; Mr Stephen Yeboah, Director of Human Resource; Dr Mrs Vida Owusu Prempeh, Dean of Student Affairs; Dr Jacqueline Obeng, Lecturer; Mr Samuel Nketia, Acting Director of Works; Dr Vera Achiaa Darko, Medical Director; Mr Gabriel Awuah, Procurement Officer; and Mr Duah, Head of the Registrar’s Secretariat.
