THE Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has given the assurance that government is taking steps to address teacher shortages in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region and across the country.

He said the Ghana Education Service (GES) would open a nationwide recruitment portal on April 10, 2026, to engage new teachers, a move expected to help fill staffing gaps in underserved districts such as Builsa South.

Dr Apaak gave the assurance during a sod-cutting ceremony for educational projects in the district on Tuesday.

He explained that the recruitment exercise would provide an opportunity for the Education Ministry and the GES to deploy more teachers to areas facing acute shortages to ease pressure on existing staff and improve teaching and learning outcomes. It would also provide employment opportunities in the area, he added.

Dr Apaak noted that several schools in the district continued to struggle with inadequate teaching personnel, a situation that affects classroom delivery and overall academic performance.

He said increasing the number of teachers would help reduce workload on current staff and create a more conducive learning environment for pupils.

The Deputy Minister added that improving teacher availability remained central to government’s broader strategy to strengthen the educational sector.

The planned deployment will lead to improved student-teacher ratios and better academic performance across various districts and regions, he said.

Dr Apaak further stressed the need to align infrastructure development with adequate staffing, noting that new school facilities must be supported with enough teachers to achieve their intended impact.

He indicated that the ongoing projects in the district formed part of wider efforts to improve educational infrastructure and expand access to quality education for all students across the district.
