Members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Madina, Adenta and Abokobi Municipalities in the Greater Accra region on Tuesday observed this year’s World Teachers Day with fun games.
The male and female teams of the groups engaged in football, volleyball and aerobics.
The occasion was also used by corporate institutions including the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) as well as other insurance companies and the Teachers Shopping Mall to showcase their products.
Opening the games, The La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Director of Education, Ms. Gifty Frimpomaa Nkansah called for more recognition for teachers in the country.
According to her, the teacher was the most important person from whom formal education commences and as such deserves more.
Ms. Nkansah[R21] , citing some important roles of teachers, indicated that the teacher was the one who directly implements the curriculum to the child, leading the beneficiary to become an important member of society.
She stated that the economic activities of some parents limited interaction with their children there by transferring that responsibility to the teachers who mold them to become responsible adults, critical thinkers and good global citizens.
She urged society to offer more support for teachers in their communities to enable them deliver on their mandate.
Ms. Nkansah charged the teachers to take issues of their health seriously by exercising regularly, observe leisure as well as spend quality time with their families.
The Adenta Municipal Director of Education,Gifty Mussey said the day afforded the participants the opportunity to fraternize and urged them to promote the new nutritional friendly programmes currently undertaken by the Ghana Education Service.
