Mike Tyson has dismissed Evander Holyfield’s fresh call-out for a trilogy fight with a classy reply.
58-year-old Tyson visibly struggled as he went the distance in his eight-round defeat to Jake Paul at the weekend, with many fans hoping he’ll now hang up the gloves for good.
However, 62-year-old Holyfield has other ideas and instead took to social media to suggest a third fight with his old rival.
If this unlikely trilogy were to happen, it would be a bout with a combined age of 120 between the two combatants.
Holyfield posted his call-out on social media on Monday, posting a mocked up trilogy poster featuring himself and Tyson.
But Tyson left a comment dismissing the idea.
“I love you brother, but the trilogy is our friendship,” he said in reply.
This will come as a relief to many fans who did not want to see the pair back in the ring again at their advanced ages.
While Tyson made headlines with his return against Paul, Holyfield also had a similar bout three years ago.
In 2021, while in his late 50s, The Real Deal returned for a fight against Vitor Belfort.
He was brutally knocked out in one round in very sad viewing and has not boxed since.
In their primes, the pair produced two legendary fights.
However, it’s fair to say that one was more infamous than the other.
When they first met in 1996, Tyson was stopped by Holyfield in round 11 against the odds.
But their rematch a year later is more memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Tyson was disqualified for biting into Holyfield’s ear in what became known as the ‘Bite Fight’.
While there has been talk of a trilogy fight on many occasions in the 27 years since, it has never materialised.
Fans will probably be pleased to see that it won’t be happening now, when the pair are clearly no longer suited to the sport.
Both legendary boxers are likely to remain retired in future
