UG Physics Head Launches Powerful Novel on War, Displacement and Resilience

The Head of the Department of Physics at the University of Ghana, Dr Allison Felix Hughe, has launched a 313-page novel titled, “Benu: Dreads of Fire and Fate.”

Authored by Mrs Glowen Wombo Kyei-Menah, the novel which was launched on Saturday, chronicles the turbulent journey of a young Liberian girl whose life is reshaped by civil war, was unveiled at a brief ceremony in Accra.

Speaking at the event, Dr Hughe described the novel as a powerful testament to human resilience, noting that the story mirrors the experiences of many West Africans displaced by violent conflict.

He explained that the narrative, which moves from Zwedru to Monrovia and later to Ghana and other parts of the sub-region, captures the trauma, displacement, and eventual rebirth that define the journeys of countless survivors of war.

Dr Hughe commended the author for her courage in documenting a deeply personal and emotional story, which he said highlights themes of survival, identity, migration, and the enduring strength of women.

He expressed optimism that the book would resonate with readers across the continent and inspire hope among young people.

Mrs Kyei-Menah said her new novel was a coming-of-age story centred on Ben u, a girl from rural Liberia whose peaceful childhood was shattered by civil war.

Her journey takes her through Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, and other West African countries, as she learns to navigate unfamiliar environments while building new communities and support systems far from home.
According to the author, the story reflects the experiences of many African women who, despite countless obstacles, remained  resourceful, determined, and committed to forging better futures for themselves and their families.

The book traces Bendu’s childhood, school life, friendships, and the difficulties she faced as she moves from one country to another in search of stability and purpose.

Mrs Kyei-Menah, a passionate advocate of promoting reading among children and teenagers, expressed hope that the novel would inspire young people facing their own challenges.

She emphasised that powerful stories still had the ability to shape minds, nurture critical thinking and ignite hope.
