About 300 people participated in a health walk on Saturday to commemorate the United Nations’ (UN) 80th anniversary.
Dubbed the “Peace Walk”, and themed “UN at 80: Ghana and UN — Shared Responsibility for a Better Tomorrow,” the event was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the United Nations, and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The 6.2-kilometre walk began at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) and passed through some major streets in Accra. It formed part of a week-long series of activities marking the milestone celebration.
Participants included members of the diplomatic corps, security services, and other stakeholders from institutions such as the GAF, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, and Ghana Prisons Service.
Delivering a speech on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Director of Multilateral Relations Bureau, Mrs Akosua Okyere-Badoo, said the exercise not only celebrated 80 years of the UN’s service to humanity but also promoted good health, solidarity, and collective action, values that lie at the heart of the UN’s mission.
Mrs Okyere-Badoo emphasised the importance of working together to build healthier, stronger, and more resilient communities, describing the walk as “a powerful reminder that progress is greatest when we act together.”
She noted that Ghana has greatly benefited from its partnership with the UN, especially through vaccination campaigns, maternal and child health initiatives, and universal access to clean water and sanitation.
The UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Mr Zia Choudhury, commended Ghana’s strong contribution to global peacekeeping efforts, noting that the UN has successfully undertaken numerous peacekeeping missions worldwide with significant participation from Ghana’s Police Service and Armed Forces.
He reaffirmed the UN’s continued commitment to serving the world’s most vulnerable populations while promoting peace, dignity, and human rights for all.
The Director at the GAF Headquarters, Col. Simeon Nante, also reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering support for UN peacekeeping missions, pledging that the Armed Forces would remain ever ready to represent Ghana on the international stage.
