UniMAC graduates 897 students

THE University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has graduated 897 students at its fourth congregation in Accra, marking a significant stride in the country’s efforts to strengthen the media, communication and creative arts sectors.

The ceremony, held on the theme “Persuasion: Media, Communication and Influence of the Creative Arts for 21st-Century Education,” underscored the growing role of digital innovation, creative expression, and ethical communication in national development.

Out of the 897 graduands, 803 were from the Institute of Journalism, 53 from the Institute of Languages, and 41 from the Institute of Film and Television. The cohort included 676 females and 221 males, with 109 earning First Class honours and 486 receiving Second Class Upper.

The distribution, according to management, reflects both the strong interest in media studies and the increasing participation of young women in the communication sector.

Addressing the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of UniMAC, Professor Eric Opoku Mensah, commended the graduands for their discipline and resilience, urging them to see their academic achievement as a call to leadership rather than personal advancement alone.

He described the ceremony as a celebration of the next generation of “storytellers, analysts, communicators, broadcasters, translators and creative innovators” poised to shape public thought and national discourse.

Prof. Mensah noted that technological evolution was reshaping the global media landscape, adding that artificial intelligence, digital platforms and emerging communication tools had made persuasion a central skill for leadership.

“Persuasion is no longer just an art; it is a measure of leadership. Who controls the narrative influences the world,” he said.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, Mr Albert Agyei lauded UniMAC’s transformation into a leading specialised public university dedicated to media and creative arts training.

He emphasised that the institution’s mission anchored on strong theory, practical training, innovation and artistic expression remains central to preparing graduates for a rapidly evolving communication industry.

Mr Agyei said the country depended on the skills of journalists, filmmakers, designers, translators and creative professionals to promote national values, support democratic governance and advance Ghana’s cultural identity.

Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Wilberforce Dzifa, praised the university for expanding its digital learning capabilities through a Learning Management System, allowing broader access to e-learning and creative practice.

He described the graduands as “Generation Z leaders” who must leverage technology responsibly to promote development, preserve culture and strengthen national cohesion through ethical communication.
