The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has called on the citizenry to use the 66th Independence Day celebration to retrace the values of the liberation struggle.
“We need to feel and appreciate the freedom by retracing the paths to the values of the liberation struggle and make them the foundation of the society since economic independence is still relevant for progress, growth and development of the country,” it said.
According to the party, laws, rules and regulations were not working while the environment and the economy had deteriorated after attaining independence hence, workers in the formal and informal sectors could not testify to the much-hyped independence.
These were contained in a statement issued by the Acting National Communication Director of LPG, Nana Yaw Owusu, copied the Ghanaian Times in Accra ahead of the celebration of the 66th Independence Day.
It noted that the working class suffered from repressive and capitalistic laws, rules and regulations that deterred them from fully exercising their rights and urged the government to make the environment conducive for them to contribute to nation building.
“Recent threats of industrial action upon the announcement of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme and demonstrations from workers and some organisations clamouring for better working and living conditions could be attributed to rights and freedom diminishing in the country.
“The current laying off of workers and threats of those in the financial sector is also an attestation to the fact that all is not well with the country which has become a mockery to our independence and freedom and needed an action-oriented and solution-driven leadership to help alleviate economic agony the working class and ordinary people are going through.
“Citizens deserve better and cannot remain the same after 66 years of independence that is why the LPG is calling on them to join us save the country as we celebrate this year’s Independence Day to recognise the suffering of the workforce and the masses to offer them better condition of work and livelihoods,” the statement entreated.
It indicated that with fertile, arable lands, rich natural resources, the nation deserves better governance and management of resources so as the people did not complain of mismanagement of resources for better leadership towards the progress, growth and development of the nation.
