The Volta Regional (VR) Police Command on Monday destroyed 600 fertiliser sacks of Indian hemp, weighing a total of 47,530 kilogrammes, following a court order authorising the disposal of the narcotic exhibits. Valued at GH¢4.2 billion, the drugs were seized in 2022 in the case of The Republic versus Yao Kwadwo, alias Wallako, and two others, and had been tendered as evidence during the trial.
A statement signed by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Volta Regional Police Command, and shared with The Ghanaian Times, indicated that the destruction followed an order issued by the Ho Circuit Court, presided over by Felix Datsumor, after years of court proceedings.
The exercise was supervised by the Circuit Court Registrar, Mr Moses Dzanfi; State Attorney, Mr Joseph Opusomah; Mr Daniel John Pekyi of the Narcotics Control Commission; and Mr Emmanuel Mensah Gbekor of the Environmental Protection Agency. The 600 sacks were completely burnt at about 10:30 p.m. at the Klefe dumping site under strict security provided by the Police and National Security, with journalists present to witness the process.
The Volta Regional Police Command expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their support in combating the drug menace and reiterated its commitment to eradicating illegal narcotics in the region.
