The Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency in the Upper West Region, Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu, has expressed appreciation to residents and stakeholders of the district for their collective efforts in driving what has been described as one of Ghana’s strongest successes in reducing poverty.

In an interview with The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday, the MP noted that the Wa West District recorded a significant reduction in multidimensional poverty between 2021 and 2025, positioning the district among the country’s leading examples of progress in the fight against poverty.

Data captured in a new report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), titled “Multidimensional Poverty in Ghana: Levels and District Rankings, 2021–2025,” showed that Wa West reduced multidimensional poverty from 61.9 per cent in 2021 to 24.0 per cent in 2025.

The achievement represents a decline of more than 37 percentage points within four years, making it the largest improvements recorded nationally within the period under review.

Mr Toobu attributed the milestone to the collective efforts of stakeholders across the district, including traditional authorities, community leaders, development partners, public institutions and residents who have contributed in various ways to improving livelihoods and development outcomes.

He noted that the progress made by the district was not the responsibility of one individual but the result of sustained collaboration and shared commitment towards development.

The MP commended all those who had played roles in supporting poverty reduction initiatives and development interventions in the district over the years.

He urged residents and stakeholders not to relent in their efforts but continue working together to sustain the gains made and pursue even greater achievements in the coming years.

“We must continue to work hard and remain committed to the development agenda of the district because progress is a shared responsibility,” he stressed.

Mr Toobu expressed optimism that with unity, commitment and sustained investments in development, Wa West could continue to improve living standards and create opportunities for its people.

He stated: “my vision is to better the everyday lives of my constituents through the introduction of customised innovation in consultation with relevant stakeholders.”

The latest Ghana Statistical Service report measures multidimensional poverty beyond income levels, assessing deprivation across areas such as education, health, living standards, employment and access to essential services.

The Wa West District’s improvement highlights growing efforts at local development and poverty reduction interventions aimed at improving the well-being of residents.
