THE West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) on Wednesday held its 2026 scholarships awards for 70 tertiary students at Shama in the Western Region.

The event, also the induction of the 12th batch of beneficiaries from Shama, Aboadze, Dwomo, Abuesi, Lower Inchaban in Western Region, and Tema and Kpone, in the Greater Accra Region, was on the Theme: ‘Built to Last’.

Beneficiaries will pursue courses in engineering, law, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and other disciplines at the University of Ghana, Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, Takoradi Technical University, University of Development Studies, and University of Education, Winneba.

In his address, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, WAPCo, Dr Issac Adjei Doku mentioned the batch, which included 37 males and 33 females, reflected the company’s continued commitment to equity and inclusion.

“Today is not just about scholarships. It is about investing in futures, building confidence, and creating opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. I congratulate all the beneficiaries, your parents, guardians, and community leaders whose guidance has brought you this far,” he remarked.

Over the past 12 years, Dr Doku noted that WAPCo’s scholarship had supported 673 brilliant but needy students across Ghana, with awards granted consistently every year, and indicated that, “we celebrate sustained educational support for the communities.”

From the first batch of 41 beneficiaries, the   programme had remained steady, impactful, and truly built to last, he said.

He continued that, “The strength of this scheme is best seen in the lives it has transformed. Our beneficiaries have become engineers, health professionals, educators, finance professionals, creative leaders, lawyers, and community mentors.

“Many have graduated with distinction, others are serving in hospitals, schools, and industries across the country. These real stories remind us that this scholarship is not a short-term intervention, but, a long-term investment in people and communities,” he explained.

Again, through this support, WAPCo, Dr Doku emphasised, was helping shape professionals whose knowledge and values will influence generations to come.

He told the beneficiaries that the scholarship marked the beginning of a meaningful relationship with WAPCo and were expected to work hard, excel academically, uplift their families, communities, and the nation.

Beyond university education, he opined, WAPCo had also supported 108 young people through the Community Youth Enterprise Scheme, providing skills training in areas such as catering, electrical works, carpentry, auto mechanics, and fashion design.

Dr Doku assured that “WAPCo remains committed to its host communities, rooted in mutual respect, shared growth, and the continued safety of our pipeline infrastructure.”

The Municipal Director of Education, Raphael Adu Taylor, noted the beneficiaries earned the scholarships through   hard work, perseverance and vision, and offered the opportunity to further their academic pursuit.

He added “Today, we come together to witness not just the awarding of the scholarship, but the opening of doors to a brighter future, the unlocking of potential and the planting of seeds that will one day grow to benefit our society in immeasurable ways.”

The Municipal Chief Executive, Paul Dentu, applauded WAPCo for showing consistent commitment  towards education at Shama, adding “ they are  investing in the future of our  young students.”
