The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has reiterated the government’s commitment to reviving and modernising the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO).
He said plans were underway to reposition VALCO to ensure it delivers maximum benefits to Ghanaians, stressing the company’s potential as a critical pillar in driving Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.
The Minister made the disclosure when the Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, paid a working visit to the Ministry as part of efforts to enhance the accessibility of the Presidency and strengthen inter-ministerial coordination.
Briefing the Vice President on the Ministry’s mandate, the agencies under its purview, and challenges inherited upon assumption of office, Mr Buah described VALCO as a largely untapped national asset.
“VALCO is a quiet lion that can change our country. We have big plans for its revival,” he stated.
The Minister’s remarks come weeks after a 12-member inter-ministerial committee, inaugurated in November 2025 to identify a strategic investor for VALCO, submitted its report to the Ministry.
The modernisation of VALCO forms a key component of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation’s (GIADEC) strategy to establish a fully integrated aluminium industry in Ghana, in line with national industrial transformation objectives.
The project is expected to revitalise VALCO, increase its annual production capacity, protect existing jobs and create thousands of new direct and indirect employment opportunities for Ghanaians, while restoring the company’s prominence and contributing to long-term economic growth.
In her remarks, the Vice President said the visit was part of a series of engagements with various ministries aimed at assessing performance and fostering effective coordination between her office and sector ministries.
