A 23-year-old woman has been arrested by the police for allegedly
dumping her five-year-old son in a well at Ogome,
a surburb of Somanya, in the Eastern Region.
Rita Dede, who was said to have
confessed that she had dumped her son in the well due to neglect by the baby’s
father, has been detained to assist police in investigations.
Public Relations Officer of the Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ebenezer Tetteh confirmed the arrest to the Ghanaian Tmes.
He said the body of the little boy has been
deposited at the Atua Government
Hospital in Odumase-Krobo for preservation and autopsy.
DSP Tetteh said the suspect and Mercy Tawiah reported
to the police that her (suspect) son, Joseph Tettey, who was playing
with his friends, was missing.
The Police PRO said the police searched for the
boy to no avail.
DSP Tetteh stated that the Youth
Employment Coordinator for Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly,
George Teye Wayo, and Prophet Benjamin Teye Lawer handed
over the suspect to the police, claiming that she had confessed to
them that she dumped her son in the well at Ogome.
He said when the police went to the scene, they found the deceased in the well, adding that photographs of the body had been retrieved, and the body deposited at the mortuary.
