The  World Bank Group has donated 41 computers and accessories and a flat -screen colour television to the Dodi-Papase Senior High Technical School (SHTS) to promote the teaching and learning of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the school.

The gesture forms part of a nationwide initiative by the World Bank in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Communication (MOC) to improve the study of ICT in Senior High Schools (SHS) in the country.

Presenting the computers to the Dodi-Papase SHTS at Dodi-Papase in the Kedjebi District of the Oti Region yesterday, a representative of the World Bank, Mr Emmanuel Twenebua, said the objective of the World Bank was to promote quality ICT education in second cycle institutions in the country, to enable students to become abreast of the world of technology.

Mr Twenebua stressed that the world was driven by technology, and it was important for the youth to learn and appreciate the importance of technology to enable them to become relevant in the business world, where technology was at the centre of every activity.

He stressed the need for the school authorities and students to adopt the culture of maintenance to ensure that the computers were protected and used for the intended purpose to benefit present and future students.

The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Dodi-Papase SHTS, Mr Hanson Torde, thanked the donors for the gesture, and stressed that “this is not merely a donation of equipment, it is an investment in the future of our youth and the development of our country,” he stressed.

Mr Torde said the equipment would definitely transform academic activities of the school, saying students studied ICT theory with limited practical experience, and the new computers would bridge the gap between students in remote areas like Dodi-Papase and those in towns and cities in the study of ICT.

The headmaster of Dodi-Papase SHTS, Mr John Mensah Da-Silveira, said the computers would enable ICT instructors to teach the subject more effectively, adding that the ICT laboratory would not benefit only ICT students but other students too.

Mr Da-Silveira explained that the school would integrate technology into the study of all subjects and urged students to take advantage of available opportunities in education to develop themselves to become responsible adults in the future.

The school prefect, Master Emmanuel Oduro Mensah, who was excited about the computers, said “many of us never had regular access to a computer, we can now practise what we learnt in textbooks, do research for assignments, projects and develop digital skills that are essential for future education.”
