15 Bono East communities submerge following heavy rains

At least 15 communities located on the shoulders of the Volta River in the Bono East Region have been reportedly sub­merged due to the rising levels of the river, following continuous heavy rains there.

The affected communities are in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.

About 2,000 people have been rendered homeless in the three week-old flooding in that part of the country.

Personal belongings running into several thousand of Ghana cedis have also been washed away by the flood waters.

The affected communities are Pentecost Nsuano, Adiembra, fanteakura, Tokobikope, parts of breakenty and Vultidekope.

Others are part of Tonka, Agokope, Logakope among others.

Some basic schools in the affected areas have temporarily been closed down due to the situation.

The affected schools are Kadue primary, Breakenty DA primary, Pentecost DA, Fanteakura DA and Vultidekope DA primary.

The Assemblyman for Yeji Traditional Council electoral area in the Pru East District Awudi Godwin confirmed the story to the Ghanaian Times.

He said the homeless peo­ple are currently putting up in churches, family members in other communities upstream of the Volta River.

NADMO officials he alleged were yet to visit the scene to assess the situation.

He therefore appealed to NADMO, government and NGOs to come to aid of affected people in the area so as to allevi­ate them from their plight.

The Assemblyman also called on the media to shift their at­tention to the people in the Pru District in order to receive help from government
