3 killed, others injured in dawn crash at zebilla

Three persons, including a breastfeeding mother, were killed in a road crash involving a VVIP passenger bus and a Toyota Sienta at Yikurugu near Zebilla in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region on Saturday.

The accident occurred at about 5:30 a.m., leaving three other passengers with severe injuries and throwing the community into mourning.

The injured victims, who were travelling in the Toyota Sienta, were rushed to the Zebilla Hospital and are receiving treatment, while two other occupants reportedly escaped unhurt.

An eyewitness, Jude Albert, said he was awakened by a loud impact and rushed to the scene, where he found some passengers lying unconscious.

“It appeared three of them had already died. Together with others, I helped transport the injured victims to the hospital,” he said.

The driver of the VVIP bus, Mohammed Haruna, said he was travelling from Bolgatanga to Bawku when the accident occurred.

According to him, the Toyota Sienta driver might have dozed off, causing the vehicle to veer into the path of the bus.

However, police have not confirmed the claim and have commenced investigations.

The Bawku West District Chief Executive, James Ayamwego, described the incident as unfortunate and expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

He urged motorists to remain alert and comply with road safety regulations, especially during the early hours when fatigue and poor visibility increase accident risks.

Police investigations are ongoing.
