31 farmers, fishers and institutions pick awards tomorrow at National Farmers’ Day in Ho

At least 31 individuals made up of farmers, fishers and organisations will tomorrow be honoured here in Ho, the Volta regional capital, for their contributions to agriculture development in the country.

In addition, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture will also award institutions, universities, senior and junior high schools that are engaged in practical farming.

As part of a week-long of activities to mark the occasion, a number of universities and other tertiary institutions are showcasing their research findings in food and agriculture and engaging policy makers for informed decisions.

President John Dramani Mahama will grace the occasion and use the platform to outline the government’s policy on food, agriculture, and present the 2025 Overall National Best Farmer award to the deserving farmer.

The theme for this year’s celebration “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future” is expected to encourage Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of eating what we grow and grow what we eat.

The theme aligns with the broader goal of promoting the consumption of locally-grown food and other agricultural produce, to reduce importation and create wealth in the rural areas where the bulk of food production takes place.

President Mahama since assuming office had instituted a number of agricultural programmes including the Feed Ghana flagship programme, which supplied free farm imputs like seeds and fertilisers to farmers.

The government also is also promoting technology in agriculture and provided what is popularly known as equipment at farm gates, to enable farmers to have access to tractor services to modernise their farms, and increase their income levels.

The country has witnessed an appreciable level of improvement in agriculture production with some parts of the country witnessing gluts in eggs, tomatoes and other food crops in the country.

As part of measures to prevent post-harvest loss, the government invested GH¢200 million to purchase the food surpluses from farmers and store for future use.

The government’s establishment of farmer services also helped farmers to adopt to modern agriculture, where majority of farmers no longer depend on cutlasses and hoes as the tools for cultivation, which resulted positively in the abundant food supply being experienced in the country.

The 2025 farmers’ day celebration honours categories include the overall National Best farmer, 1st Runner-up National Best Farmer, 2nd Runner-up National Best farmer, National Best University in practical agriculture, National Best Secondary School in practical agriculture, National Best Junior High School in practical agriculture, National Best Primary School in practical agriculture.
