4 injured in Agona West MP, NPP parliamentary candidate supporters’s clash
A clash between supporters of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West Constituency, Mrs Cynthia Morrison, and those of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the same constituency, Chris Arthur, has left four people injured.
The violence resulted in a gunshot from an unidentifiable person, leading to the victims receiving wounds.
The injured included the Nasara Coordinator of the NPP, Haruna Rasheed, who was said to be in critical condition.
Personnel at the Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command declined to give details regarding the clash, when contacted.
Both factions have been accusing each other of instigating the attack, thereby heightening tension in the constituency.
The Campaign Manager for the incumbent MP, Isaac Osei, in an interview with the Ghanaian Times, alleged that supporters of the NPP parliamentary candidate instigated the attack.
He said Mr Arthur’s supporters stormed the campaigning venue of Mrs Morrison, who is contesting for the seat in this year’s parliamentary election as independent candidate.
Mr Osei noted that after the police refrained supporters of the parliamentary candidate, they mounted another attack on supporters of the MP.
He, however, revealed that, they did not actually know where the bullet that injured the three came from.
Mr Osei further disclosed that the matter has been reported to the Agona Swedru Police.
The NPP Agona West constituency Chairman, Jibril Tanko, also alleged that the NPP’s parliamentary candidate’s team was rather attacked by supporters of Mrs Morrison, without any provocation after a campaign tour of the Otinkorang community.
He mentioned that the NPP supporters had to go through the crowd at Nyankrom, and accused supporters of the incumbent MP for instigating the attack.
The clash, he said, had been reported to the police for investigations and possible arrest and prosecution of the culprits.
