The police have arrested six persons in connection with Tuesday’s rioting at New Winneba in the Central Region, which resulted in the death of three people.
Fifteen people, including a police officer, who sustained various degrees of injuries, including gunshot wounds, were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba for treatment.
Those arrested are Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.
The Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie, mentioned that the suspects were in police custody assisting with investigations.
He said at about 10:40 a.m. on Monday, a mob of about 300 people, allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, stormed New Winneba and attacked some residents.
According to him, the mob also attacked shops and residences in the township, destroying several properties.
Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, as well as the Inspector-General of Police’s special team, were deployed to the area as reinforcement.
Two armoured vehicles from the Police Headquarters were also deployed to support the security operation.
Chief Inspector Ettie said the police retrieved one locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the scene.
He said, as part of measures to restore and maintain law and order, the police had established six snap-check points in the area.
Day and night patrols had also been intensified to prevent any further escalation of the situation, he added.
Personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had also been deployed to monitor developments and assist with investigations.
The police have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as efforts continue to restore normalcy to the area.
