6th edition of Accra City Open Doubles championship ends

 It was all thrills and excitement at the finals of the sixth edition of the Accra City Open Doubles Tennis championships played at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club (ALTC) with over 150 Doubles team participating.

In all, over 150 Doubles teams regis­tered for the Men’s 30/39 age division, 22 for the Men’s 40/49 age category, 11 pairs for Men’s 50/59 age group, six pairs for the 60/69 group, two for the 70/79 division and a pair for the 80plus category.

At the end of hostilities, prizes were presented to winning group in the various age groups, climaxing another edition of the Grandmaster Tennis event.

In the Women up to 39 division, the pair of Linda Sedinam/Naa Ayorkor Ofoli defeated Eugenia Asigri/Afia Oforiwaa Aboagye 6-4, 6-1 to emerge victorious.

Perhaps, the biggest upset was the win by the Doubles team of Faustina Tagoe/Sara Holst over Emily Stoi­ber/Kate Coleman 9-3 in the Women 40/50+.

Honours in the Men Semi pro 41plus went to the pair of Prince Ablorh/ Mustapha Owusu Ansah after beating Stephen Borteye/Isaac Odoom 9-1.

The Mixed Doubles Social winners’ medal went to Wisdom Aheto/Linda Sedinam who beat Alex Kumah/Lola Mogaji 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.

In the Men 30/39 Social, Frank Quartey-Simpson/Richmond Kotey defeated Kweku Logic/Nicholson Nar­tey 5-7, 6-3, 10-4 to emerge victorious just as George Heckson/Nana K Sam Awortwi (Alinco) won against Alex Kobina Mensah/Jacob Oheneba 7-6(0), 7-5 to win the Men 40/49 Social event.

The Doubles team of Dr Maxwell Adjei/Lawrence Lartey and Godwin Ayindua/Amoako Atta also produced a delightful final match in the Men 50/59 Social event which the former won.

And with a 6-4, 6-1 victory, Paa Grant partnered Bob Williams to beat Kobby Brew and Prince Owusu-Ye­boah 0-6, 6-3, 10-7 to emerge winners of the Men 60/69 Social while the Men 70+ Social clash had Charles Sagoe/Ar­nold Addy patnered to defeat Eugene Affram/Nana Dadson 9-6.

Mr Peter Annan, Chief Executive Officer of Grandmaster Tennis Events, organisers of the tournament, thanked and commended the participants, arguing competitive this year’s event has been.
