African Political Parties Summit to focus on political leadership, economic transformation
The Africa Governance Centre (AGC), in collaboration with the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, is set to host the Second Edition of the African Political Parties Summit (APPS) from November 5 to 7, 2026, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The high-level summit will be held under the theme: ‘Governing for Growth: Political Parties as Architects of Africa’s Economic Future,’ under the high patronage of Mr Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
The event follows the launch of the African Political Parties Initiatives (APPI) in Ghana last year, with President John Dramani Mahama delivering the keynote address.
Contained in a press release, the summit will bring together political party leaders and representatives, policymakers, parliamentarians, governance institutions, development partners, academics, civil society organisations, youth leaders and private sector actors from across Africa and beyond.
The gathering will provide a platform for participants to deliberate on the role of political leadership and political parties in advancing Africa’s economic transformation, strengthening democratic governance and promoting sustainable development.
The summit will, therefore, seek to deepen discussions on how political leadership can contribute to building resilient economies, accountable institutions and sustainable development pathways capable of improving the lives of citizens across the continent.
“The 2026 edition of APPS is expected to align with the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, particularly its vision of a prosperous, integrated and peaceful Africa driven by effective leadership, strong institutions and people-centred development,” it stated.
A major feature of the 2026 summit will be the convening of two flagship platforms: the African Youth in Politics Forum (AYPF) and the Africa Women Political Leadership Summit (AWPLS), focusing on promoting meaningful participation of young people and women in political leadership and decision-making processes across Africa.
The platforms will also provide opportunities to explore strategies for strengthening inclusive governance and addressing barriers that limit the representation of women and young people in Africa’s political systems.
Furthermore, through high-level plenary sessions, thematic dialogues and stakeholder engagements, the Second Edition of APPS will seek to strengthen collaboration among political actors and other key stakeholders.
