AMA, Intellivision Technologies sign pact to establish plastic-to-fuel pyrolysis plant

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Intellivision Technologies Ltd to establish a 100-tonne plastic-to-fuel pyrolysis plant in Accra.

Construction is anticipated to begin in January of next year and is expected to be completed within 18 months.

It will employ Hydroxy System’s patented pyrolysis technology to transform plastic waste into high-quality petrol, diesel, kerosene, and activated carbon.

This initiative is projected to generate approximately 1,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities for the residents of Accra and surrounding areas.

During the signing ceremony held in Accra yesterday, the Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer of the AMA, Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, announced that the facility would be situated on a 25-acre plot along Korle Bu Mortuary Road in the Greater Accra Region.

He said the facility represents a viable solution to the plastic waste issue in Accra, as it would assist in diverting thousands of tonnes of low-value plastics from drainage systems and landfills, reduce open burning, and convert waste into valuable oil and gas.

‘’Beyond the environmental gains, the plant will create jobs across collection, sorting, and operations, strengthen our sanitation efforts, and give the city a reliable end-market for sachets and films that recyclers cannot use. This is about cleaner neighbourhoods, flood prevention, and a circular economy that works for our people,” he explained.

He pointed out that the MoU aligned with the Assembly’s efforts to improve sanitation, reduce the environmental burden of plastics, and stimulate green jobs through private-sector participation.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Mr Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, emphasised that the initiative was great and would help keep the city clean, and encouraged other Municipal Assemblies, even outside Accra, to adopt this initiative to help keep the country clean.

The Chief Executive Officer of Intellivision Technologies Ltd, Mr Kelvin Boateng, stated that the agreement was intended to “ignite a movement” that placed innovation at the centre of Accra’s waste management.

He added that the company’s strategy focused on the circular economy and described the project as a pathway to a cleaner, healthier and more prosperous future for residents.

Mr Boateng also indicated that the facility was anticipated to generate employment and open up new economic prospects, asserting that a clean city was fundamental to dignity, social welfare, and economic resilience.

He said the collaboration with the AMA exemplifies how partnership could ensure that “nothing is wasted and everything has value.”

He described the initiative as a benchmark for Ghana and the broader African region, highlighting that plastic waste should not be perceived as the conclusion of a product’s life cycle but rather as a resource for new value.

The Head of Waste Management at the AMA, Mr Solomon Noi, stated that while some individuals do manage plastic waste, they typically handle it in limited amounts and welcomed the initiative as an excellent one.

“A technology is set to transform this plastic waste into valuable fuel for our industries’ use,” he noted.

He clarified that one tonne was equivalent to 100 bags of cement, thus establishing a plant capable of processing 100 tonnes of plastic waste would contribute to a cleaner Accra while simultaneously producing fuel.

In attendance at the event were the Presiding Member of the AMA, Mr Musah Ziyad, the Metro Coordinating Director, Mr Douglas N.K. Annoeful, the General Manager of Intellivision Technologies Ltd, Madam Jacqueline Asante, along with other distinguished guests.
