Asare saves Hearts blushes in Dreams FC stalemate

Black Stars and Hearts of Oak shot stopper, Benjamin Asare, on Friday stood between Dreams FC and what could have been their biggest win of the season, pulling exceptional saves to aid the Phobians to secure a goalless verdict in their Match day 19 clash of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon.

It was a game of two halves that witnessed a superior Hearts knocking on all fronts to score in the first half with the second turning into a battle between Asare and Dreams FC.

Coming into the game on the back of a victory against new boys, Hohoe United, away, the Phobians were expected to add Dreams FC to their victims; however, the visitors, who were chasing a third victory on the bounce, proved to be tough customers on the day.

Mohammed Hussein was presented with a golden opportunity to put the Phobians ahead after 10 minutes, when he broke free with the ball from his own half and raced past defender Chris Yaovi Guede.

That brought him face to face with only 16-year old goalkeeper, Rahman Osman, at his mercy.

However, he missed that golden opportunity as the youngster disposed him of the ball, a chance the Phobians rued after the final whistle went for the end of the game.

Afterwards, Dreams FC upped their game as the action moved from one half to the other, with the host slightly on top but failing to create clear cut chances.

Dreams FC’s striker, Abdul Razak Salifu, nearly fetched the opener in the closing stages of the first half, but his connection from an Ebenezer Adade’s cut-back lacked the accuracy to beat Asare in post.

Four minutes after recess, Salifu nearly got the opener for the visitors after being put through by skipper John Antwi, but Asare rushed out to save the ball.

In the 52nd minute, Suraj Seidu finally broke Asare’s resilience when he found the back of the net after being put through by Antwi but to the relief of the home fans, the goal was called out for offside.

A minute later, Seidu turned provider, crossing for Antwi to head home, but Asare proved equal to the task with a great save, while a header on goal by Christian Owusu from the resultant corner kick by Adade saw Asare score another full marks.

Asare continued his exploits in goal with a great save from an Antwi strike on the hour before Hearts of Oak almost stole victory late in the game from a corner, but that danger was dealt with by Osman Rahman to keep the scores even.

The draw, eighth for the Phobians this season, sees them move to fifth on the log on 32 points, while Dreams FC climbed to eighth with 24 points.

Hearts will next face Eleven Wonders in an away game at the University of Ghana Stadium, while Dreams FC hosts Young Apostles at the Tuba Astro Turf.
