The senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, produced a brilliant second-half performance to thrash the Cleopatras of Egypt 4–0, earning a 7–0 aggregate win after two legs of the final qualifier for the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
A hat-trick by striker Doris Boaduwaa and a sublime finish from Comfort Yeboah were enough for the Black Queens to seal qualification in front of their home fans at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday.
For Head Coach Kim Lars Björkegren, it was his first victory on Ghanaian soil.
The Black Queens appeared in a buoyant mood, putting aside pre-match issues of bonus rows, and played their hearts out to entertain the fans.
They played a barren first half, missing several glorious opportunities, with Boaduwaa, Princess Marfo, and Evelyn Badu being the worst culprits.
After 52 minutes of pressing for the opener, striker Boaduwaa sent the cheering Ghanaian crowd into a frenzy when she capitalised on a mistake from goalkeeper Habiba Emad Eltaher, in post for the Egyptians, to slot home.
Three minutes later, Princess Marfo found Boaduwaa in the six-yard box, and she slotted home her second goal of the afternoon.
Just when the Egyptian Queens were trying to regroup, defender Comfort Yeboah hit a sublime strike from the right, which zoomed straight into the net in the 57th minute for her first goal at senior level.
Substitute Stella Nyamekye put Boaduwaa on goal in the 90+2 minute to complete a hat-trick and score her side’s fourth goal.
The win secures the Black Queens’ qualification to the expanded 16-nation WAFCON in Morocco, slated for March 17 – April 3, 2026.
The tournament will also serve as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be staged in Brazil, with the top three finishers qualifying.
