Black satellites face Togo today …in decisive Group A WAFU B U-20 clash
Ghana’s U-20 male team, the Black Satellites, will take on hosts, Togo, in the final Group A match of the WAFU U-20 Championship today.
The Black Satellites, top of Group A with four points from two games, are set for a thrilling showdown against Togo, as both teams vie for a spot in the semi-finals.
Coach Desmond Ofei will rely on sensational duo Jerry Afriyie and Aziz Musibau to cause problems for the Togolese in the tricky final group match.
Hosts Togo, has had a mixed results so far, recording two draws, including a scoreless stalemate against Benin in their latest match.
Togo and Benin are tied in second place in Group A with two points apiece, while Niger are bottom on a point.
The Black Satellites must just avoid defeat to secure qualification to the semi-finals of the sub-regional championship.
The WAFU B U-20 championship serves as the qualification for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, with only the finalists going through.
The 2025 U-20 AFCON will also serve as the African qualifiers for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, where the four semi-finalists will qualify automatically.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s hopes in the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations took another hit as the national team suffered a 5-2 defeat to Morocco on match day three of the tournament.
The loss follows a tough opening match against Egypt, where Ghana fell 6-3, leaving the team with a challenging path ahead.
Ghana struggled to keep pace with their North African rivals, who capitalised on defensive lapses and showcased a clinical attacking performance.
Despite a strong start to the game, Ghana succumbed to two quick goals before pulling one back in the second period.
The Moroccans, however, maintained control throughout the match and stretched their lead to 4-1 before Alexander Adjei scored Ghana’s second goal of the day and his fourth in the tournament.
The Moroccans scored their fifth goal inside the final period to take the game out of Ghana’s reach.
Head Coach, Daniel Neequaye, expressed disappointment over the team’s performance but remained optimistic about their upcoming clash with Tanzania.
“We need to regroup and focus on our last match. The players have talent; we just need to refine our strategy and execution,” he stated in his post-match comments.
