Black Starlets chase semi-final ticket …in ongoing WAFU Zone B U-17 championship
Ghana’s u-17 team, the Black Starlets, will today seek to confirm the top spot in Group A of the ongoing WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations when they take on the young Cheetahs of Benin at the University of Ghana Stadium at 6pm.
Ghana has already book a semi-final berth following their emphatic 5-1 victory over the young Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on the opening day.
A 1-0 victory for the Young Elephants over Benin on Saturday, mean a win or a draw for Coach Laryea Kingston’s side today will see them top the group, heading into the semis.
However, the Beninois may go through in place of Ghana if they win the game by 5-0.
Already in a strong position to qualify for the semis, Coach Kingston’s eyes is fixed on returning his side to the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following the team’s last appearance at the 2017 edition in Gabon.
Speaking ahead of the game, he said, “we came into this tournament to make sure that we win
all our games. Benin is our next obstacle and we need to see them off.”
Having watched the tactical Beninois lose to Cote d’Ivoire via a late goal from substitute Adama Diabate, Coach Kingston has his plans well laid out to get past his opponent today.
Despite putting five goals past Cote d’Ivoire, Kingston is still not a happy man as he believes his side was sloppy and gave away some big chances against the Ivorians.
The WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations provides the Black Starlets with a pathway to the U-17 AFCON which they last featured at the Gabon edition in 2017.
For Coach Honfo Adjimon Urbain, his boys are motivated to give this game their best shot, knowing qualification would be a daunting task.
