Catholic Church honours Speaker of Parliament

The Wa Diocese of the Catholic Church has honoured the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for what it described as his enduring legacy of leadership grounded in wisdom and service.

The recognition took place during a Eucharistic celebration held in his honour at the Chapel of the Bishop of the Wa Diocese on 30th January 2026.

During the service, the Bishop of Wa Diocese, Most Rev Francis Bomansaan, praised the Speaker for his statesmanship and commitment to the underprivileged.

He noted that the Upper West Region and Ghana at large are fortunate to have a selfless leader and devoted Catholic serving as Speaker of Parliament.

A citation presented to Rt Hon Bagbin described him as a Christ like leader who exemplifies humility, service, love and integrity.

The citation noted that in a time when truth and integrity are scarce in public life, he stands out as a figure whose honesty offers guidance and hope.

In a brief statement, the Speaker expressed gratitude to the Catholic Church for the honour and called for continued prayers and spiritual guidance for national leadership.

He also highlighted the role of the Catholic Church in Ghana’s development, particularly in deprived areas such as the Upper West Region.

He described the Church as a major pillar of development in northern Ghana and commended its contribution to education and health through the establishment and management of quality schools and health facilities.

Speaker Bagbin encouraged the Church to continue addressing both the spiritual and material needs of the underprivileged.

He further pledged Parliament’s support for the initiatives of religious bodies and faith based organisations across the country.

The event ended with prayers led by the Bishop and a group of priests, who asked for good health and divine blessings for the Speaker.
