The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has invited Major Kojo Boakye-Gyan (rtd) for questioning in connection with his alleged ‘Civil War’ comment.
The former military officer’s comment was reported to have followed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to go ahead with the compilation of a new voters’ register for the upcoming elections.
He allegedly accused the EC of leading the country to a ‘Civil war’, regarding its decision.
The Head of Public Relations of CID, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Juliana Obeng, who confirmed these to the Ghanaian Times, in Accra, said an invitation had been extended to the former military officer, and was expected to report on May, 15, 2020, but was yet to show up as at the time of filing this report.
Major Boakye-Gyan (rtd) was reported to have stated that the attitude adopted by the EC was an attempt to rig the election for the NPP government even before the election was conducted, and that only a civil war could address the problem.
The EC in a statement said it would go ahead with the registration exercise.
The commission said it would observe all necessary safety measures to ensure that Coronavirus does not spread when it begins compiling the new voters register.
“All stakeholders are hereby reminded that plans are far advanced for the compilation of a new register with a new voter management system for the upcoming 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections,” the EC said, in a statement signed by the acting Public Affairs Director of the Commission, Mrs Sylvia Annoh.
The EC stated the exercise has been scheduled to start in April, 2020, but has been put on hold indefinitely, following the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country.
