Court adjourns case of suspect vandalising statues of ‘Big Six’

The case of the man accused of vandalising the ‘Big Six’ monument at the Airport Roundabout in Accra has been adjourned to October 4 by the Kwabenya Circuit in Accra, yesterday.

Appearing before Mr Emmanuel Kumi, the presiding judge, the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Gershon Achondo, told the court that the report of the psychiatric examination of the accused, Newell Gavu is not ready.

On September 4, the court referred the accused for a psychiatric examination.

Consequently, Gavu has been remanded in police custody.

On August 31, 2024, the police arrested Gavu for allegedly vandalising the monument at the Airport roundabout.

Chief Insp. Achondo told the court that on August 31, 2024,

at approximately 4:10 a.m., the complainant, Henry Akorlie (Jnr.), was on his way to work at Kotoka International Airport Terminal 3 when he spotted the accused breaking the Big Six statues with a hammer.

He said Akorlie promptly apprehended Gavu and handed him over to the police.

The court heard that upon investigation, the police found out that five of the statues had been destroyed, while one remained partially damaged.

The policeman stated that during interrogation, Gavu admitted the offense but gave inconsistent statements, eventually claiming that a spirit in his dream had instructed him to destroy the statues.

Chief Inps Gershon further noted that investigations revealed that Gavu and his family were squatting in an uncompleted building at Oyarifa Ampomah Last Stop.
