Cynthia Kwabi wins Sheroes ‘Love Edition’ championship
Ghana’s seasoned table tennis star, Cynthia Kwabi, was crowned the winner of the Ghana Table Tennis Association’s (GTTA) Sheroes Open Championship ‘Love Edition’ played on Saturday, February 14, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Kwabi, one of the country’s finest female table tennis players with vast local and international experience, began her campaign strongly, cruising past Millicent Mettle with a convincing 3–0 win at the round of 16 stage and overpowered Celia Danso 4–1 in the quarter-finals.
In a keenly contested semi-final, she showed composure and resilience to defeat Hilda Agbottah 4–2 to book her place in the final.
The final lived up to expectations as Kwabi came up against one of Ghana’s youngest rising stars, Joanita Borteye, who earlier stunned two-time champion, Augustina Badioo, with a 3–0 victory.
The clash electrified the D.G Hathiramani Hall, with fans on their feet throughout the encounter. Kwabi controlled the tempo from start to finish, sealing a deserved 4–1 victory to emerge the ‘Love Edition’ Sheroes champion.
Speaking after her triumph, Kwabi said her focus and preparation were key to the victory. “My target for the tournament was clear — I wanted to win. I faced a different opposition in the previous edition, but this time I told myself I had to give my best. I took it step by step, stayed calm, and focused on what would work for me in each game.”
She added that confidence and careful observation of her opponents helped her to stay composed, saying that, “There was no pressure on me because I had studied everyone’s performance. I knew who could give me a tough time, and I also knew I had prepared well enough not to lose twice within a short period. I trusted my training and believed the game was fair and manageable for me.”
She vowed to continue training to maintain her performance to compete and win more tournaments.
